British Silver Coin

I was going through the box of generic rounds at the local coin shop and one round caught my eye. Upon inspection, I realized that it was British currency. It's a 2002 two pound denomination coin. It's marked "one ounce fine silver." The front has a profile of the queen, and the back has a robed woman clutching a trident and a sheild. It's a very attractive coin. Has anyone seen these before? I thought it was a good find, compared to what is usually considered to be generic silver.

Is it a Britania? On second thought probably not because Britania I believe is made of sterling. Never mind I don't know but if it says .999 I suspect it is just a round replicating British currency and not actually leagal tender. Maybe some of our British friends here at GIM can clarify.

It is the Great Britain 2 Pound Silver Britannia. Mintage 100,000/year. It contains 1 troy ounce and is made of .958 silver. A very beautiful coin.

APMEX sells the uncirculated 2002 Britannia for $31.30.

It's a Britannia, my preferred UK coin. :proud:

IMO one of the best looking bullion coins. .958 fine is called "Britannia Silver". Great find!

Yeah it is a Brittania. I'm a little surprised that it's not .999 silver, but at least it contains a full ounce overall. Thanks for the feedback and info guys!

small world - I ordered 20 of these the other day. Bad investment in bullion terms, but they were pretty so I picked some up.

There's a good story behind .958 Britannia Silver. Seems some time back folks were melting silver coins to manufacture "Sterling" items. .958 I understand was introduced to bring the melting to a halt.
